Our Presbyterian Heritage
We were founded by the Westminster Presbyterian Church in Lakeland, and were originally owned by the Synod of the South Atlantic, supported solely by contributions from Presbyterian churches throughout Florida. In 1966, we were incorporated as a not-for-profit organization. We remain focused on encouraging our residents to embrace life and to pursue fulfillment through vital involvement and honoring the wisdom of each other.
History of our Senior Care
What today has become Florida Presbyterian Homes began in early 1955 when a pastor was called in to visit Erwin Howland in the Lakeland Terrace Hotel. Erwin had just come out of the hospital, was over 80, and was tired of living in a hotel – he wanted a place more like home. With his subsequent gift and contributions from others, a six-room house was purchased to provide care and a place to live for 10 seniors. Since then, our retirement community has expanded to serve over 300 residents on a 48-acre lakeside campus.
The history of our community revolves around the extraordinary people who have lived here and the dedicated staff that provides the highest level of senior care. “Our residents think of this as their home, not an institution,” were the words of our founder, Dr. Monte Johnson. And that’s what we have always been, a home where older adults can live out their dreams in a loving Christian community.
